Hong Kong authorities have told residents not to be fooled by an online video made with artificial intelligence (AI) that falsely shows city leader John Lee Ka-chiu endorsing a high-return investment scheme.

A government spokesman on Wednesday warned the public about the bogus video circulating online that claimed the chief executive was urging residents “to participate in an investment plan with high returns”.
“The government solemnly clarified that the so-called remarks by the chief executive are fictitious,” he said, advising residents to stay vigilant against such scams.
The spokesman also condemned those attempting to distribute fake investment advice, noting that the incident had been referred to police for investigation.
It is not the first time a senior Hong Kong official has appeared in a bogus video created with AI-based software.

Earlier this month, authorities also warned the public about a scam that used a deepfake video of Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po touting a new government investment opportunity. Police have already launched an investigation into the case.
