Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in decades spurs outpouring of aid for victims

People from all walks of life in Hong Kong rallied in support of victims of the city’s deadliest fire in decades, with aid ranging from millions in cash donations by major business groups to grass roots efforts by civilians delivering essential supplies.

The fire that erupted in seven blocks in Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po on Wednesday, killing at least 75 people, left thousands of residents homeless and in need of daily supplies.

“What happened on Wednesday night appeared to be such a large-scale event in Hong Kong,” said Paul Wong Wai-ching, a clinical psychologist and an associate professor from the University of Hong Kong’s department of social work and social administration.

“Everyone hoped to do something for Hong Kong after [the social unrest] in 2019 and the Covid pandemic.

“This is a chance for people to give back to society and unite Hong Kong.”

Among them was a group of volunteers who created websites allowing residents to indicate the location of their trapped family members or their status.
