Hong Kong woman, 93, killed by reversing rubbish truck; driver arrested

Hong Kong police have arrested a rubbish truck driver after his vehicle struck a 93-year-old woman who later died.

Police said the driver was reversing the vehicle into a school at 3 Harmony Road in Siu Sai Wan at around 1.27pm on Saturday when the woman was hit and became trapped underneath.

“At about 1.27pm, a special purpose vehicle driven by a 66-year-old man reportedly knocked down a 93-year-old female passer-by when it was reversing into a school on 3 Harmony Road,” the force said.

Police said that the woman sustained multiple serious injuries and was certified dead at 2.25pm.

Authorities said the driver, surnamed Ho, had been arrested for dangerous driving causing death and was currently held for questioning.

The force’s special investigation team for traffic on Hong Kong Island is currently investigating the case, with police urging witnesses and those with information to call 3660 6814.
