Hong Kong TV drama sets, Star Ferry wheelhouses ‘unique venues’ for tourists

Hong Kong could open up TV drama sets and Star Ferry boat wheelhouses, among other locations, to visitors to create new hotspots that showcase what the city’s various districts have to offer, the tourism minister has said.

Authorities earlier this week unveiled the much-awaited tourism industry development blueprint, which included government collaborations with organisations to “open up a series of unique venues to visitors”.

In a television interview that aired on Saturday, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui was asked what the government meant by unique venues.

“Some people have suggested that tourists may be interested in visiting locations that we think are just a part of our daily lives such as the wheelhouse or engine room of a Star Ferry. It has truly become a part of Hong Kong’s history that many find fascinating,” she said.

Other potential hotspots include TV drama sets, she said, adding: “There are other good tourism hotspots in different districts that we are able to explore.”

The latest tourism blueprint stated that Hong Kong had the potential to develop city walk routes thanks to its high accessibility, convenient transport network, and high degree of public safety.

Tourism authorities have said they plan to adopt various strategies to promote local neighbourhoods, such as publishing movie travel guides to encourage visitors to explore film locations and engage with local culture.
