Hong Kong’s weather forecaster will issue the No 1 warning signal at 12.20pm on Monday as Severe Typhoon Fung-Wong draws nearer, expected to be closest to the city later this week.
The Hong Kong Observatory said it would assess the need to issue a higher typhoon warning signal on Tuesday, when local winds are set to strengthen for two days.
It added that Fung-wong, which has already entered within 800km of Hong Kong, was forecast to turn northwards over the northeastern part of the South China Sea.
It would be closest to the city between Tuesday night and Wednesday, skirting about 400km east of the city.

“Under the combined effect of Fung-Wong and a northeast monsoon, it will be windy and slightly cooler with swells over the coast of Guangdong in the next couple of days,” the Observatory said.
