Hong Kong authorities have told the city’s largest Taoist temple to explain why it cancelled a drone show on Saturday night to the disappointment of many spectators.

A government spokesman said on Sunday the Home Affairs Department had requested a “detailed explanation” over the cancellation by Sik Sik Yuen, the operator of the Wong Tai Sin Temple.

The organisation had planned the 8.30pm drone show at Victoria Harbour to celebrate the birthday of Master Wong, a Chinese Taoist deity believed by his followers to have healing powers.

But it only made an official cancellation announcement around an hour after the scheduled start time, apologising and citing the unstable weather and signal problems affecting the drones.

An unrelated drone event at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground was also called off on Sunday evening due to the heavy rain.
