A Hong Kong taxi driver has been arrested after allegedly hitting an elderly woman who later died in hospital from her injuries.

On Saturday, police reported that a 61-year-old taxi driver surnamed Lo was driving along Wah Ting Street when he turned left onto Ap Lei Chau Main Street and allegedly struck an 81-year-old woman surnamed Chou.
When officers arrived at the scene, Chou was found unconscious with a head injury and was rushed to Queen Mary Hospital in Pok Fu Lam. She was certified dead on Sunday morning at around 9.20am.
After a preliminary investigation, officers arrested Lo on suspicion of dangerous driving causing bodily injury. He is currently being detained for further investigation.
It is not yet clear whether he will face additional charges in light of the woman’s death.

According to Transport Department figures, there were 5,714 taxi accidents last year, representing an 8 per cent increase compared to the 5,265 recorded in 2023 and a 48 per cent increase compared to 2020, which saw 3,857 such accidents.
