Hong Kong education authorities will offer HK$500,000 (US$64,246) to each public primary and secondary school that applies for funding to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) in classrooms over the next three years, with about HK$500 million allocated for the initiative.
Schools receiving the funding can subscribe to AI-powered software and hardware, but must implement AI-assisted teaching in at least three subjects while developing six teaching examples or resources with the technology.
The Education Bureau announced the details on Tuesday in a circular to all public primary and secondary schools, saying the HK$500 million allocation would be used to boost the use of AI in schools.

Interested institutions, including special and direct subsidy scheme schools, are required to submit their application forms by February 2026.
“Successful applicants will receive one-off funding of HK$500,000. Schools can use the funding in line with the guidelines to purchase, subscribe, lease AI-powered devices and services that support AI-assisted teaching, as well as to subsidise students’ participation in activities that enhance their AI literacy and skills,” undersecretary for education Jeff Sze Chun-fai said.

Sze is also the chairman of the Steering Committee on Strategic Development of Digital Education, set up in January this year to propose measures for advancing the city’s digital education.
The announcement followed Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s policy address last year, in which he pledged to step up efforts to promote digital education in primary and secondary schools.
