Tens of thousands of Hongkongers and tourists welcomed the new year, as cheers rang across the streets of Central and Tsim Sha Tsui, with many praying for world peace and a disaster-free 2026.
People could be seen cheering, dancing and even popping a bottle of champagne on Chater Road, where the main event was held. Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu also joined the celebrations there.
“This year’s countdown event, themed ‘New Hope, New Beginning’, conveyed positive energy and blessings. I also wish all Hongkongers a smooth and peaceful 2026, and that we can join hands to embrace a brighter future,” Lee wrote on social media after midnight.

As Australian rock band Air Supply, who performed at the event, returned to the stage after the countdown to play “Even The Nights Are Better”, 52-year-old Hongkonger Candy Wu danced in the street with her two daughters.
“It’s a good last-minute change just to get people together,” she said, referring to the alternative arrangements after authorities eschewed the city’s traditional fireworks display in light of the deadly Tai Po fire in November.

“A lot of people, especially the young generation, were looking forward to the countdown.”
Her eldest daughter, 15-year-old Jina Yeung, said she enjoyed seeing everyone come together.
