Hong Kong police have launched a citywide search for a driver and his Audi after a tense incident with officers in which one constable drew his gun while his colleague hit the vehicle’s windscreen with a baton in a failed attempt to stop it from speeding away.
The pursuit involving a police BMW car began at around 9am on Friday when the black Audi was found speeding through a red light on Kwai Fuk Road in Kwai Chung, according to the force.
A police spokeswoman said the car, driven by a man, also illegally crossed a double line on Tsuen Wan Road.
A video posted online shows the car trying to overtake the police vehicle while being blocked on a three-lane carriageway. In the clip, the Audi reversed and sped away before police gave chase.
The car eventually stopped after being caught in traffic congestion at Tsuen Tsing Interchange at the junction of Tsuen Wan Road and Texaco Road in Tsuen Wan, according to the force. The interchange is about 1.5km (0.9 miles) away from Kwai Fuk Road.
When the pursuing police car arrived, two officers from the New Territories South traffic unit approached the Audi and ordered its driver to exit the vehicle.
After the driver ignored repeated police orders, the spokeswoman said, one of the two officers drew his gun, while his colleague used a baton to hit the windscreen of the car.
She added that the car managed to speed away heading towards Tsing Yi.
One of the officers tripped and suffered abrasions to his left arm and leg. The injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment.
The police car continued the chase, but its left rear tyre burst while it was reaching Cheung Tsing Highway in Tsing Yi, according to the force.
The Audi was last seen travelling on the Ting Kau Bridge, heading towards the Yuen Long-bound Tai Lam Tunnel.
As of 2pm, police said no arrest was made in connection with the case.
Detectives from the Kwai Tsing district crime squad are following up on the case.
