Hong Kong police officer remanded in custody over grabbing firearm, voyeurism

A Hong Kong national security police officer has been remanded in custody for allegedly attempting to grab a handgun from a colleague after being arrested on suspicion of voyeurism earlier this week.

Constable Ko Chun-chung, 39, was escorted to Kowloon City Court on Friday to face one count of operating equipment with intent to record or observe intimate parts and another charge of attempted possession of a firearm without a licence.

Ko, a member of the force’s National Security Department, allegedly took upskirt photos of a woman while riding an escalator inside Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station on Wednesday.

He was arrested at 12.45pm that day and detained at Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station for questioning, before allegedly trying to grab a colleague’s revolver inside a reporting room during the inquiry.

Prosecutors asked that no plea was taken on Friday, to allow time for police to collect relevant surveillance footage and examine the defendant’s mobile device as part of the investigation.

Acting Principal Magistrate David Ko Wai-hung scheduled the next hearing for mid-March before rejecting Ko’s bail application.
