Authorities received a report from an animal welfare volunteer who discovered the cat’s body in a vacant lot near Ho Kai School off Ho Sheung Heung Pai Fung Road at about 11.25am on Monday.

The cat, believed to be a 45cm-long stray male domestic shorthair and estimated to be around three to four years old, had its head shoved in a sock secured with a zip tie around its neck.

Police classified the case as one of cruelty to animals and handed it over to the Border district investigation team.

Staff from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals were also dispatched to the scene to investigate. Their initial examination showed a fractured skull.
