Hong Kong police arrest man, 50, over alleged hit-and-run that killed dog

A 50-year-old man has been arrested over an alleged hit-and-run that killed a dog in Hong Kong’s New Territories.

Police said on Friday the non-Chinese man was apprehended the previous night in Yuen Long on suspicion of dangerous driving and failure to report and stop after an accident involving specified animals.

The force received a report at about 4.30pm on Thursday from a woman who said she saw a light goods vehicle hit a dog along Kung Um Road in Yuen Long at around 2pm. The vehicle fled the scene afterwards.

The dog was later certified dead.

A 24-second dashcam video shared widely on social media showed a blue pickup truck running over a dog while turning right into a side street near the road in Yuen Long.

The dog was seen being dragged underneath the vehicle and rolled over by the wheels. It hobbled to the roadside after struggling to get up.

The Road Traffic Ordinance said drivers were required to stop if they hit cats, dogs, horses or cattle, among other animals.

Any driver who fails to stop can face a maximum fine of HK$10,000 (US$1,280) and a year in prison.

Motorists who fail to notify police within 24 hours of an incident can be fined up to HK$25,000 and imprisoned for six months.
