The Hong Kong Observatory issued a No 3 typhoon signal at 10.40am on Saturday as Tropical Cyclone Trami intensified and its outer rainbands affected the city.

The forecaster earlier said Trami had continued to move steadily westwards, skirting to the south of Hong Kong at a distance of about 500km (310 miles) or more and intensifying slightly.

“Local winds are expected to strengthen gradually today. As winds will veer to the east later today, some places which have been sheltered before may become exposed,” it said.

The Observatory advised the public to stay away from the shoreline, and not to engage in water sports.
