Hong Kong, Macau and mainland China’s Guangdong province have struck a deal on cybersecurity aimed at enhancing cooperation in technological exchange, information sharing and emergency response measures in the Greater Bay Area.

A lawmaker and a veteran IT professional welcomed the signing of the agreement, saying cross-border information sharing played a crucial role in addressing cyberattacks amid a fractured geopolitical landscape.
Representatives from the governments of the three places signed the memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Nansha, Guangzhou, during the opening ceremony of the 2024 China Cybersecurity Week on Sunday.
“In the past year, in the face of the complex international situation, Hong Kong experienced many challenges to cybersecurity. This made us more aware that without cybersecurity, there is no national security,” said Sun Dong, the secretary for innovation, technology and industry.
“[Without cybersecurity] the smooth process of advancing from stability to prosperity cannot be guaranteed, nor can the fundamental interest of the public be protected.”
