Hong Kong launches probe after hospital lamp falls and hits doctor, worker

Hong Kong health authorities are investigating after an examination lamp fell in a treatment room at a private hospital in Tsuen Wan, hitting two staff members.

The Department of Health on Monday urged any operators who were using the same model, the Polaris 50, to contact their local supplier.

A staff member and a doctor were trying to adjust the lamp inside a treatment room of the Urgent Care Centre at Hong Kong Adventist Hospital in Tsuen Wan on Sunday night when it fell and struck them. The patient they were treating was uninjured.

“According to the [hospital’s] report, upon a doctor finishing a procedure for a patient in a treatment room of the Urgent Care Centre last night, the examination lamp suddenly fell while a healthcare staff assisting the doctor was trying to adjust it, hitting both of them,” the department said.

“Upon examination, neither suffered any major injuries and did not require hospitalisation for treatment. The patient, who was in the treatment room at the time of the incident, was not injured.”

The department said it was investigating.
