The Hong Kong Observatory issued a cold weather warning on Sunday morning as temperatures in some parts of the city fell to about 8 degrees Celsius (46.4 Fahrenheit).

The Social Welfare Department urged families to take care of their elderly relatives after the local forecaster sent out the warning at around 11am.
“With the approach of cold weather, the Social Welfare Department reminds the elderly to take precautionary measures during the cold spell,” it said.
“Relatives, friends and neighbours are encouraged to show concern and care for the health of frail elderly persons, particularly those living alone.”
The Observatory also called on residents to check up on elderly people living alone or with chronic medical conditions.

The temperature stood at 8.4 degrees on Tai Mo Shan, the city’s highest peak, as of 11.20am, while readings at Ngong Ping on Lantau Island fell to 9.3 degrees.
