Hong Kong eyes culture, sports and tourism ties with Singapore to boost economy

Hong Kong will explore opportunities to deepen ties and cooperation with regional rival Singapore in culture, sports and tourism, with the aim to jointly develop the sectors to drive economic growth, a minister has said.

Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law Shuk-pui outlined the government’s ambitions as she met her Singaporean counterpart, Edwin Tong Chun Fai, on Monday.

“We are pleased to strengthen our collaboration with Singapore to promote exchanges and interactions in the areas of culture, sports and tourism, and to explore more opportunities to develop these areas as an industry to increase prosperity in the Asian region,” Law said.

Tong, who is the city state’s minister for culture, community and youth, as well as the second minister for law, is in Hong Kong for an official four-day visit.

Hong Kong authorities said on Monday that Law and Tong had exchanged views on policies promoted by both governments.

The pair also discussed “future opportunities to deepen mutual international exchanges and cooperation in culture, sports and tourism”.

The tourism and entertainment sector ambitions of Hong Kong and Singapore have been in sharp focus recently, with the former recently missing out on another series of concerts by a global superstar.
