Hong Kong educators call for a ‘return to normality’ after Tai Po fire tragedy

Schools in Hong Kong’s Tai Po district that were not severely affected by the deadly blaze at Wang Fuk Court should resume in-person classes and follow their original timetables, a head teachers’ representative has said, adding that this would help students return to normality and heal from grief.

Chu Wai-lam, chairman of the New Territories School Heads Association, said on Tuesday that many schools in the district had also organised mourning activities, which he believed would help relieve students’ sadness.

His remarks came as schools in the district gradually resumed in the aftermath of the fire, which led to the suspension of classes in at least six institutes.

“Under such temporary and emergency situation, [off-campus physical classes] would be sure to bring inconvenience, and our goal is definitely to resume classes on campus,” Chu told a radio programme.

“During this process, we also have to let students know that such temporary measures are supported by different sectors and we should learn to appreciate their help. For me, this is another process of learning.”

SKH Yuen Chen Maun Chen Primary School, located near the estate, restarted physical classes on Tuesday. However, Tai Po Baptist Public School – situated within the area cordoned off by police after the fire – was still conducting lessons at off-campus locations.
