Hong Kong delivery van driver killed after slamming into back of lorry on highway

A Hong Kong delivery van driver died on Monday afternoon after his vehicle slammed into the back of a lorry along a highway.

Police officers and firefighters were called to the scene in Tai Po after the collision happened on the Sha Tin-bound lane of Tolo Highway at around 2.16pm.

A video posted online shows the van crashing into the back of the lorry, which appeared to have stopped on the highway’s slow travel lane at the time.

According to the force, the van driver, a 59-year-old man, was trapped behind the wheel and had to be freed by emergency personnel.

A police spokesman said the man was unconscious as he was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, where he died soon after 3pm.

Police said the lorry driver, 66, was unhurt in the incident.

Officers from the New Territories North traffic unit are following up the case.

Official figures showed 51 people were killed in 47 traffic accidents across the city between January and June of this year.

Throughout last year, 96 people died in 96 fatal crashes.
