Police said he was sent to Tin Shui Wai Hospital after he was pulled from the wreckage. The driver was a customs officer who was heading to work at the port, a source said. But he succumbed to his injuries at around 1.30am.

The fall was estimated by a Post photographer at the scene to have been dozens of metres, perhaps as many as 50 (164 feet).

It appeared the vehicle rolled before going over the railing, which was intact. Debris could be seen littering the point where the car went over.
