Hong Kong box office receipts drop by 65% during Easter holiday

Hong Kong’s box office revenue during the Easter holiday shrank by 65 per cent compared with the same period in 2024, prompting a firm that tracks cinema bookings to call for more public support given the difficult operating environment.

The revenue from film screenings in Hong Kong and Macau across four days from last Friday to Monday stood at HK$13.5 million (US$1.7 million), 65 per cent less than the HK$38.4 million generated during the same period in 2024.

“This shows that the operating environment of Hong Kong cinemas continues to be difficult. We hope residents who like movies will … continue to support cinemas and the Hong Kong film industry,” Hong Kong Box Office, a firm that tracks cinema bookings, said on Tuesday.

A Minecraft Movie, a Hollywood film, topped the box office chart, generating HK$3.1 million over the four days.

Flow, which won the prize for best animated feature at the Oscars, was placed second, earning HK$1.4 million over the period.

In third place was Warfare, a war film written and directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, earning HK$1.3 million.
