Hong Kong health authorities have launched an investigation into a suspected mad honey poisoning case involving a 38-year-old man who consumed a product made in Nepal.

The Centre for Health Protection said on Monday that the man started suffering from dizziness, nausea and generalised weakness two hours after consuming honey the day before.
He visited the accident and emergency department at Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei on Sunday and was admitted for observation after showing signs of bradycardia, which refers to an abnormally slow heartbeat. The man’s condition is now stable.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the honey in question was produced in Nepal, and the poisoning could have been caused by grayanotoxin, the centre said.
A source said the man claimed to have bought the honey two years ago in Mong Kok and first consumed it on Sunday, but could not provide any exact details about the seller.

This is the third case of suspected mad honey poisoning to trigger an investigation this year, according to a check of government announcements.
