A new coach hall at the revamped second terminal of the Hong Kong International Airport will have twice the number of parking spaces when it opens on September 23, along with new shops and restaurants that serve the city’s signature “two-dish rice”.

The Airport Authority said on Monday that public bus stops and taxi ranks would remain at Terminal 1, while spaces for limousines, tour buses, and local and cross-boundary coaches would be located in the new coach hall in Terminal 2.

“We all know many tour groups visit Hong Kong every day and these coaches are now parked in the Terminal 1 outdoor car park. In the future, they will be in a very comfortable all-weather facility, equipped with air-conditioning,” executive director Steven Yiu Siu-chung said.

“The coach hall is also unique in the world because of the inter-mode arrangement,” he added, referring to the airport’s connections to multiple checkpoints and access to transport options such as high-speed ferry, coach and limousine services.

He also highlighted an expansion of the types of travellers who might be exempt from the increased air passenger departure tax of HK$200 (US$15) – up from HK$120 – to be implemented on October 1. Travellers can apply for the tax refunds electronically.

The new measure stipulates that those who arrive in Hong Kong via air, land or sea, and who depart via air within two calendar days, are also eligible for the air departure tax exemption.
