Hong Kong’s legislature has spent HK$200,000 (US$25,640) on a model that captures the moment lawmakers passed the city’s domestic security law, with its president saying it is “worth the price”.

Legislative Council president Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen also said on Friday that he understood the government had lobbied all lawmakers for their support for a controversial same-sex partnership bill and urged legislators to “vote with their conscience”.
Leung said the model, commissioned by the Legco secretariat, would be placed in its library and open to the public to view in one or two weeks.
“We believe this is an important part of national education,” Leung said.
The model shows the moment lawmakers approved the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance in March last year, a constitutional responsibility spelled out in Article 23 of the Basic Law, the city’s mini-constitution.

Leung said the model replicated the gestures, positions and outfits of all lawmakers and government officials in the Legco chamber when the bill passed.
