In the morning of May 16, at Jining Wenshang County No. 1 High School in Shandong, a massive student protest broke out. More than two thousand first- and second-year high school students rushed out of classrooms and gathered in the school square. The students shouted “Let us out!” and held up banners they had prepared, drawing cheers from the crowd. One banner read, “Defend sovereignty abroad, punish traitors at home,” echoing the slogan from the May Fourth Movement in Beijing over a hundred years ago.
