TAIPEI, Taiwan—Former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland warned that an extraterritorial clause in China’s ethnic unity law shares a “dark kinship” with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rhetoric before the Ukraine invasion, urging democratic countries to push back against Beijing’s latest measure.
Freeland, who served as Canada’s deputy prime minister from 2019 to 2024, made the remarks during a speech at the Ketagalan Forum on Aug. 4. The event, hosted by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, focused on security issues in the Indo-Pacific.
The Chinese law, officially known as the “Promoting Ethnic Unity and Progress Law,” went into effect on July 1. It provides a legal basis for advancing a Beijing-defined “shared” national identity and bans acts that “undermine ethnic unity” or “incite ethnic divisions.”…
