Police received a report at 9.33am on Sunday from a passer-by that the three-deck Sun Ferry vessel “Xin Chao” from Cheung Chau had collided with Pier No 5 while docking.

A part of the pier’s staircase railing was broken and bent in another section, with debris scattered across the ground.

According to the force’s preliminary investigation, the vessel failed to stop in time and lost control while berthing, causing it to collide with a railing measuring 1 metre by 2.5 metres (three feet by 8.2 feet), the staircase parapet and the roof structure on the shore.

But all passengers safely disembarked and departed the pier, police added.
