The former mother-in-law of slain Hong Kong socialite Abby Choi Tin-fung has been jailed for 1½ years for obstructing a police investigation into her son after the model’s murder came to light two years ago.

The District Court on Tuesday ruled that Jenny Li Sui-heung, 66, deserved a deterrent sentence for attempting to prevent police from locating Alex Kwong Kong-chi and persuading Choi’s mother to remain silent about his whereabouts.
Judge Stanley Chan Kwong-chi described Li as a doting parent spoiling her child and said she betrayed contempt for the judicial process through her actions.
“There are no ‘ifs’ in history, but if the defendant were willing to let justice run its course, asking her son to correct his misdeeds and urging him to face the legal consequences of the theft allegations against him, perhaps many things would not have happened,” Chan said.
The judge also suggested the jail sentences previously handed to two of Kwong’s accomplices had been too lenient, but acknowledged it was beyond his power to order a review of the penalties in that case.

Li is expected to complete her sentence soon, having served 16 months in remanded custody before the hearing.
