The High Court on Thursday recorded a guilty plea on a count of attempted murder from Chan Chi-shing, 31, who committed the crime just three weeks into his new job at the branch at Sun On Building in Sai Ying Pun.
The court heard Chan had been mostly unemployed since completing Form Six education in 2012, having worked as a waiter at a hotpot restaurant in Aberdeen before joining the fast-food chain restaurant on May 27, 2023.
A prosecution case summary said the accused was originally scheduled to work at another branch in Admiralty the following month after drawing repeated criticisms from his managers and colleagues for unsatisfactory work.
On June 18, Chan returned to the Sai Ying Pun restaurant only to be confronted by his manager, Wong Wut-san, who questioned why he did not work at the Admiralty branch and blasted him for his poor performance.

The defendant then left the restaurant, snatched two cleavers from a nearby meat vendor and returned to attack Wong at the manager’s office.
Wong sustained multiple slashes on his head and neck before he managed to knock one of the knives from Chan’s grasp. An off-duty firefighter came to Wong’s rescue by snatching the other weapon from the assailant.
