The head of the European Union office in Hong Kong has said there is room for more of the city’s residents to receive its flagship scholarship, which allows recipients to pursue a master’s degree at universities in the region and beyond.

Harvey Rouse, the head of the EU office in Hong Kong, said he hoped more Hongkongers would choose Europe as a study destination as universities’ tuition fees were generally lower than elsewhere and more than 4,500 programmes were taught in English.
Speaking to the Post in an exclusive interview 10 days before the EU’s education fair on November 7, Rouse said over 100,000 scholarships were available in member states under the European Commission for international students.
“Even without a scholarship, tuition in many EU member states is much lower than in many other places from around the world,” he said.
“Some member states don’t even charge tuition fees at all for their very well organised and respected programmes, whether it is for students of their own countries or for foreign students.”

Rouse singled out the EU’s scholarship programme, Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters, saying the course covers partial or all tuition fees and even additional support for living costs to study a master’s programme around the world since 2004.
