Interestingly, data shows that the total number of DF-21 missiles in 2022 was 134, roughly the same as the previous two years. However, it decreased to 70 in 2023, suggesting that China might be phasing out older models. By 2024, the number of DF-21 missiles had been reduced to 24.
These 24 missiles are only DF-21A and DF-21E models; other variants like DF-21/B/C/D have disappeared, especially the so-called “carrier killer” DF-21D.
Reports suggest that the DF-21A, capable of carrying nuclear warheads despite an accuracy deviation of 300 meters, can still execute nuclear strikes. The DF-21E is presumably the latest model, but no public information is available. The other variants likely have no retention value.
