More amenities should be provided to residents in Tseung Kwan O, district councillors have urged, after a plan by the Hong Kong Jockey Club to build its fourth public riding school in the neighbourhood was floated last week.
Some residents were also worried about the light and noise issues that could potentially arise from the proposed school, and the club should address those concerns, the councillors said on Monday.
“Some residents have said amenities in the area are insufficient,” Christine Fong Kwok-shan, a Sai Kung district councillor and lawmaker-elect representing the New Territories South East geographical constituency, told a radio show.

“I hope the Jockey Club can also offer leisure facilities to the community. For example, when it formulates a plan for the school, can it include some basketball courts or multipurpose premises for residents nearby? Or can it even help build a hiking trail?”
According to a paper submitted to the Sai Kung District Council last week, the new school would be constructed on a former landfill site in Tseung Kwan O, located about 400 metres (1,300 feet) away from Lohas Park, a private residential estate, and occupying some 46,500 square metres.

The Jockey Club currently has three riding schools in the city, and the new institution was planned in response to the high demand for equestrian training, with more than 20,000 people on the waitlist for a place in the schools, the paper said.
