On December 25, 2024, the Chinese government officially approved a large-scale hydropower project on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River. Upon completion, this project will become the largest hydropower station in the world, producing three times the electricity generated by the Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River. The investment is projected to exceed 1 trillion yuan, equivalent to approximately 140 billion US dollars.(repeated in next paragraph) While the project is hailed as a technological marvel, in Chinese cultural tradition, undertaking such an ambitious endeavor is often seen as defying the natural order—sparking fears of long-term repercussions. Additionally, strong opposition from neighboring countries could heighten tensions and threaten border stability in the region.
