Former Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes suspended his campaign for Wisconsin governor on July 30, exiting the Democratic primary 12 days before the Aug. 11 election and one day after a judge ruled that voters who have already returned absentee ballots cannot take them back.
More than 117,000 absentee ballots had been returned as of July 29, the day Dane County Circuit Judge David Conway rejected a bid by three Democratic voters to void ballots they had cast for a candidate who left the race. Conway wrote that a voter changing course after a candidate drops out “does not constitute an ‘accident or mistake’” under state law.
