Chinese University of Hong Kong appoints veteran administrator as vice-president

A leading university in Hong Kong has appointed a veteran academic administrator to be its vice-president in administration – the third person in the role in as many years – after his predecessor resigned less than 12 months into the job.

Albert Chow Hing-pong’s tenure at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will begin in the first half of 2026 for a term of three years, according to a statement issued by the institution on Thursday.

“I look forward to leveraging my experience in public administration to serve the university with passion,” Chow said in the statement.

The vice-president in administration is one of the university’s principal administrative officers appointed by the university council, and is accountable to the council through the vice-chancellor and president, Professor Dennis Lo Yuk-ming.

The person in that role is responsible for administering the university’s infrastructure development in line with the strategic vision set by the council.

The appointment came after former undersecretary for education Kenneth Chen Wei-on resigned as vice-president of CUHK in July, less than a year after his appointment.

Chen was appointed to a three-year term from September last year, replacing Eric Ng Shu-pui, who was abruptly dismissed after signing a petition opposing a Legislative Council bill to reduce the size of the university’s council.
