The man, surnamed Li, was 29 when he used a kitchen knife to stab his mother and his 17-year-old girlfriend to death at their home in a village in Weiyuan county in southwestern China’s Sichuan province, on July 22, 1992.
Li was arrested only in September last year. At the end of May, state broadcaster CCTV revealed the details of the case.
Police stated that they were unable to find any critical leads to apprehend Li three decades ago due to limitations in communication and technology.
Upon reviewing the case last year, investigators unexpectedly discovered that Li’s elder brother’s wife had mysteriously disappeared two months after Li fled. His brother did not report her missing to the police, as the couple had a troubled relationship.

A rumour circulating widely in the village suggested that the sister-in-law, surnamed Gu, had previously had an affair with Li, which drew the attention of the police.
