Recently, Chinese netizens exposed the controversial practice of “anesthetizing fish,” which has raised concerns about food safety.
In a viral video, a large group of lively fish are shown swimming in a pool, waiting to be loaded onto trucks. Then, several barrels of an unknown chemical are poured into the water. Within just 60 seconds, all the fish calm down, many of them floating motionless. Workers then easily scoop the fish from the pool and pack them into boxes.
Another video shows fish in the back of a truck, in a state of “fake death” after being anesthetized. Workers use nets to remove them and load them onto the truck.
