Tensions in the South China Sea are escalating, and the atmosphere is increasingly volatile. The Philippines has taken a firm stance at Sabina Shoal, vowing to defend its Coast Guard vessel, BRP Teresa Magbanua, at all costs. Not only have they ramped up air and sea patrols, but they are also mobilising fishing boats to join the effort. Why fishing boats? The answer lies in China’s tactics—just this September, China sent 203 fishing vessels to the Spratly Islands, crowding the waters and setting a new record for the year. Faced with such aggression, the Philippines had no choice but to respond in kind, determined not to let China’s fleet gain the upper hand.
