On the morning of December 29, 2025, China’s Eastern Theater Command announced the launch of the Justice Mission 2025 joint exercises. These drills represented a major military operation around Taiwan. They took place in five main areas, from the Taiwan Strait to the northern, southwestern, southeastern, and eastern offshore regions. This brought China’s forces closer to Taiwan than in previous exercises. The nearest point was about 9 kilometers from Kaohsiung, a new record for closeness.
The propaganda for these exercises used familiar methods. It included edited and exaggerated old video clips to project power and create a political show. In response, Taiwan’s military soon released a video called “Respond with calm and confidence.” It showed Taiwanese F-16 fighter jets quickly locking onto Chinese aircraft. This turned China’s intended show of strength into an embarrassing situation.
