China’s Rail Platform Sinks A Foot in 11 Years; Rampant Corner-Cutting and Tofu-Dreg Projects

On July 3, someone on social media revealed that Hangzhou East Railway Station, once touted as one of Asia’s largest high-speed rail stations, has experienced platform subsidence just 11 years after its opening. The platform has sunk to the point where there is a 30-centimeter gap between the train and the platform, forcing passengers to “jump down” from the train, risking falls if they’re not careful. Images show a stark contrast in the height difference between the platform and the train compared to 2018.
