China’s only overseas military base is in serious trouble—and it’s all because of a small, unrecognized country most people have never heard of.
China loves to talk about its growing global power. The Belt and Road Initiative spans continents, Chinese ports dot the globe, and the Chinese Communist Party claims it’s reshaping the world order. But when it comes to actual military presence abroad, China has just one overseas base—located in Djibouti, on the Horn of Africa.
And now, that base is at risk.
