The recently released 2024 National Education Development Statistical Bulletin paints a grim picture for early childhood education in China. In 2024, the number of kindergartens nationwide dropped to 253,000 — down from 274,000 in 2023. That’s 21,000 kindergartens gone in a single year, or roughly two closures every hour across the country.
