China’s Fake Economic Data Fail to Hide the Crisis, Protests Over Unpaid Wages Expose Facts

Multiple protests demanding overdue salaries have erupted across many regions in China. These protests have spread beyond construction workers to include teachers, sanitation workers, and medical staff in public service sectors.
Ironically, while these escalating wage protests continue one after another, the National Bureau of Statistics of China released the latest economic data, still emphasising growth in key indicators and a positive economic trend.

On May 19, China’s National Bureau of Statistics announced April’s economic data. It stated that the main indicators showed steady and relatively fast growth, highlighting continued positive momentum in China’s national economy.
But on the same day, the Chinese Communist Party’s official newspaper, People’s Daily, front page was dominated by calls for government agencies to practice thrift, oppose waste, and adopt frugality.
