At six in the morning on May 1st, crowds were already packed outside the Aldi supermarket in Wuxi’s Yuanrong Plaza. Thousands of people surrounded the entrance, trying to be the first to get in when the store opened at 8 a.m. Some had been lining up for hours. By 7:30, security guards couldn’t hold the crowd back anymore and had no choice but to open the doors early.
