China’s ‘Carrier Killer’: The Ultimate Joke! A History of Knockoff Torpedoes

Recently, the CCP released a video celebrating the 70th anniversary of the PLA’s submarine force. In the footage, a Type 039 conventional submarine is seen launching a torpedo that strikes an 800-ton Type 074 landing ship target. China state-run CCTV claimed that the torpedo’s impact created a water column nearly 100 meters high, supposedly “shocking the U.S.” But people were quick to mock the news, pointing out numerous flaws.
Firstly, the “nearly 100 meters” high water column touted by CCTV appeared to be only a few dozen meters high in the video, barely matching the nearby 60-meter-long target ship. Calling it “nearly 100 meters” is an exaggeration. Secondly, the exercise was conducted in shallow waters near the coast. A torpedo exploding here naturally creates a higher water column, but this doesn’t necessarily indicate extraordinary power.
