China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the event on Thursday, confirming an earlier article by the South China Morning Post which reported that the event would take place in October.
The summit, which commemorates the 30th anniversary of the United Nations’ Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, was first announced by Foreign Minister Wang Yi in March.
At a press briefing on Thursday, foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun said the meeting, co-hosted by China and UN Women on October 13 to 14, aimed to “create new momentum for global pursuit of gender equality and women’s development, and advance the building of a community with a shared future for mankind”.
He said “dozens” of state leaders, heads of governments, house speakers, vice-premiers and ministerial level officials from a range of countries would attend but did not provide a full list of the attendees.
