Taiwan’s TSMC, often referred to as the “guardian deity” of Taiwan, is a critical part of the “silicon shield” concept. In 2022, a Chinese economist with government ties called for “reclaiming Taiwan” and seizing TSMC. Some American scholars have even suggested a “scorched-earth policy” to destroy TSMC’s equipment as a deterrent to Beijing’s invasion plans.
