The man, identified by the surname Peng, was apprehended on October 2 at his home in Jiangxi province, eastern China.
Peng targeted the victim, also surnamed Peng, after viewing videos of the wedding festivities. He used Douyin, the mainland version of TikTok, to find wedding posts nearby and came across a video from September 29 in which a guest referred to the wedding host as “Boss Peng at Tieshan.” This prompted him to use a map application to locate a family with the surname Peng in Tieshan village, ultimately leading him to the victim’s address.
That same night, Peng, disguised with a wig, travelled to Tieshan village, broke into the victim’s home, and stole all the cash stored in a box.

The victim notified the police the following morning after discovering that the money was missing. He explained that the 380,000 yuan included not only the gift money from guests but also his daughter-in-law’s dowry and their welcome gift to her. He suspected that the theft might have been committed by one of the guests.

The police canvassed the victim’s neighbours and examined local surveillance footage, which revealed Peng carrying a suitcase and leaving the area at 4am in one clip.
