Over 80 schools in Shanghai have shut down this year. Last year, over 60 schools were closed, but in the first half of 2025, another batch of schools was shut down, bringing the total to over 80. Kindergartens make up the majority of the closures, accounting for 75%, with private schools being the hardest hit. The main reason for the closures is the decrease in student numbers. Over the past six years, the number of students enrolled in Shanghai kindergartens has dropped by 37%. Given the current birth rate in Shanghai, the trend of school closures may continue.
